John F. Spalding is not a peanut brittle liker, he is an absolute peanut brittle LOVER!! Ever since the late 70s, John has been “on a mission” to create the best peanut brittle recipe ever made. Always annoyed with the “brittle, brittle, brittle…oh wow, there’s a peanut” mentality of most brittles (The peanut is the most expensive ingredient in peanut brittle – and the first thing to be reduced in the interest of $$$), John set off to develop the most peanut “packin.” , stuffed peanut brittle ever made! After about 20 years, and hundreds of failed attempts, John was finally convinced that he had indeed perfected the ultimate peanut brittle. Bringing out the marble slab in November always signifies, to his wife Marian, daughter Alexis, and son Zachery, that the Spalding Christmas holiday season has begun. Each holiday season, John made enough peanut brittle to hand out to his family and friends as gifts. Life was peaceful and good. That was all about to change.
Let us take you back to Pontiac, Illinois, in the mid 60s…John had an old childhood best-friend Jay. Often, at the Threshermen’s Reunion, he and Jay used to use copper tubing to connect John’s Wilesco stationary model steam engine to a homemade miniature “hot box” (fashioned after a “hotbox” that used the steam from J.D. Roberts’ Frick Eclipse engine to cook all of the reunion’s meats). They used this contraption to steam and sell hot dogs for 10¢. As fate would have it, Jay and his charming wife Debbie ended up settling in the Nashville, Tennessee, area just months before the Spalding family’s arrival in 1996. Debbie, also being fond of a good brittle, happened upon some of the Spalding brittle one Christmas eve. With one bite, a new holiday tradition was born.
Every holiday season since, Jay and Debbie bring enough dinner for both families, and then they “kidnap” John and his peanut brittle “makin” ways! After several hours of brittle making, and a fine meal, Jay & Debbie leave John and Marian’s Hendersonville home with several large bags of fresh peanut brittle for their families and friends. Finally giving in to the persistent pleadings for production by their families, friends, and strangers, both families began serious discussions regarding the logistics of “peanut brittle making.” In November of 2006, Brittle Brothers LLC Peanut Brittle company was launched, and they have been successfully making and selling the world’s best peanut brittle ever since. |
